Underground poetry is an emerging trend across the nation,
driven by generation X and Y wordsmiths with cutting insight and great stories
to tell.  

One of the must-see stars of Australia’s alternative poetry
movement is dreadlocked, colourful and eclectic poet Candy Royalle. 

A young veteran of the festival scene, Royalle is revered by
modern day poets and word-loving audiences for her powerful verse and deep
voice.  They lend an almost soulful edge
to her performances.

Royalle’s new show Stories by Starlight sees her hit the festival scene hard in 2012 - kicking off
at Melbourne’s Midsummer Festival (18 - 21 January at the 1000 £ Bend Gallery)  and the Adelaide
Fringe Festival (1-4 March 2012, 9pm Queens Theatre).

Those lucky enough to see her pop-up preview at a fittingly
illegal venue in Sydney in 2011 - says the show packs serious poetry
punch.  

Stories by Starlight sees Royalle team up with three piece instrumentalists - Sloppy Joe for
the first time.  The musical improvisation crew are masters of off-the-cuff spontaneity and rich authentic sounds, and are certain to
add funk and sweetness to Candy’s raw energy.

Royalle says
fans of underground entertainment are in for a real treat.

“Stories by Starlight tackles everything from
love and sex to social injustice.  It’s a
seductive journey to the darker side of the human psyche. Expect a journey of self-discovery, some great tunes and even a
little burlesque,” she says.

one thing – some killer words and explosive
theatrics.

Fringe audiences were mesmerised last year.
Royalle sold out her one-woman show ‘Love Spectacular’ almost
immediately, with critics describing her “an assault on your senses”, “a feast
for your ears and your heart”. 

She’s performed alongside renowned writer David Malouf at the Australian Poetry
Festival this year.

Finnigan, curator of TiNA (This is Not Art, Experimental Arts) Festival once
